Escape to Mexico: Part 1- The Curse to be Lifted
Mexico, as moulded by the culture of the West, is often symbolic of one thing in so many of our minds. Escape. Freedom. The throwaway line or plot point in many an American movie. The protagonists trying to escape their fate hope to cross the border, leave for Mexico. My case was different. I was a whole ocean away, in the UK. The decisions that led us to choose Mexico were actually very specific. Like my previous travel adventures in Rhodes, I was embarking on my first holiday with another dear friend who I shall refer to as L.

Part 4 : Wasps and Jetskis
The next day was one for recovery and chill after having been out all of the previous one. The beach was calling after another delicious and satisfying hotel breakfast. The respite of relaxation and the need to recharge was definitely felt. It went similarly to our first day but with one main triumph and a recommendation to the reader.

Part 3: A Lost City, Cross on a Mountain and the James Bond of Bagpipes
We woke up slightly hungover and certainly dehydrated. Not a great start to a long day out but breakfast did revive us somewhat. Waiting out front for the coach, as seemed a common and welcome theme by now, I was greeted by an affection craving black cat with little white paws and a crooked ear. He jumped gingerly into my lap and his scrawny rear end rose high with every stroke. T dubbed him “Cotton Socks”, which suited him handsomely. He would be there to escort us to the shop upon our return, as any gentlecat might assume was his duty, though wouldn’t be as helpful as he thought considering we had to avoid stepping on him multiple times.

Part 2: Zeus Fills the Sky
Our room was large with high, sloping ceilings. Plain but comfortable with a fridge, a little balcony with a table that would catch the sun and racks for drying our clothes. Everything was scrupulously clean and carried a strange but inoffensive smell, most likely unfamiliar cleaning products. We were faced with a double luckily composed of two single beds we were able to push apart. I am a tall, long-limbed lady, T is significantly smaller and whilst she could sleep completely still, I knew I had a tendency to starfish and commit night time acrobatics. I was glad I didn’t have to worry about accidentally kicking her in my sleep.

My September Adventure in Rhodes, Greece- Part 1
So here I go, my first foray into international travel writing. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it and by its conclusion, be tempted to visit the beautiful Greek island of Rhodes yourself.

100 Days Without Alcohol- Challenge Completed! Pt. 2
So as I mentioned in Part 1, it’s crazy in hindsight to think I managed to complete a 100 days sober. I guess I’m learning that most things that seem crazy are simply difficult but all together possible and not crazy at all. Throughout this challenge I’ve shared my insights as it’s progressed, hoping to inspire others to do the same or at least question their relationship with alcohol. The whole experience has had a positive and profound impact on me, as I’m sure this record has demonstrated. In part 2, even so close to the end, I faced further challenges. You’ve made it this far with me (and if you’re just joining you’ll find all posts in this series linked at the end), so let’s get to the end of this thing together.

100 Days Without Alcohol- Challenge Completed! Pt. 1
Well I can honestly say that me 8 months ago would not have predicted attempting the 100 day sober challenge, let alone completing it. And yet here I am, having successfully run through the finishing line ribbon. The road has been long, difficult and, spoiler alert, absolutely worth it. Anyone who knows me would be forgiven for having had their doubts. It’s the first challenge I’ve completed of its kind in my adult life, save perhaps when I was prepping for my MMA fights. I am not someone who barely drank and for whom this challenge was an easy adjustment. Neither am I someone who had hit rock bottom and had no choice. I, like most people for whom drinking is the norm, didn’t know if it was possible for me to go entirely without this most socially acceptable of drugs, and questioned what that would mean for my life.

Would You Consider a Staycation in Maidstone?
In this economy, many of us are probably now considering holidays a bit closer to home. Covid definitely also had a hand in making the idea of a “staycation” more normalised. If you’re in the UK and considering where to go this Summer, feel free to join me in this review of our stay at 13 The Mallows in Maidstone. Amongst my friends, the staycation has actually been somewhat of an annual tradition. Every Summer, one of my closest friends hosts a weekend away for her birthday somewhere in the UK.

What Happened When I Went 60 Days Sober? — Pt.2 The Broken Heart
So if you haven’t caught up with part 1, then take a look. I was about to face the biggest difficulties in this challenge so far. It’s a lesson to learn, tomorrow is not given and life is unpredictable. It can either break you, or make you. It’s your choice.

What Happened When We Visited the Java Whiskers Cat Cafe and Book Club?
Imagine a café. Now imagine it’s full of adorable cats or kittens to play with. You’re feeding and snuggling with said cats. Now imagine there’s a bunch of likeminded individuals who are excited to discuss the book you’ve all just read over steaming beverages. I can’t think of a cosier image. Well, you don’t have to imagine it, it’s real! If I could narrow down all of life’s simplest pleasures to the two greatest, it would have to be cats and books. Nothing combines them better than the Java Whiskers Cat Café which also now hosts a book club monthly.

What Happened When I Went 60 Days Sober? - Pt. 1
I did It, I made it through the first 30 days, and they were certainly the most difficult in terms of breaking thought patterns. However, as I went into my next 30, I realised the truth, that 30 days would NOT have been enough. How many of us have done a dry January and then slipped straight back into an old habit or even overcompensated? Research shows that when forming a habit it actually takes (close your eyes and take a guess):
